Backing up your data

Keeping a backup of your Budgetizer data is a very important safeguard. Should anything happen to your computer, or should you make mistakes when using Budgetizer (for example, deleting something accidentally), having a backup will allow you to restore your data with minimal loss.

Budgetizer will automatically prompt you 30 days from your last backup to suggest that you make a new backup. (You can turn these reminders off by checking the "Never show again" checkbox in the prompt.) However, you can create a backup anytime by clicking on "File" in the Main Menu, then clicking on "Create backup...". You will be presented with a file dialog that will allow you to choose a filename and a location for your backup. You can save your backup anywhere, but it is recommended that you save it on a separate disk from where Budgetizer itself is installed. It would be a good idea to keep a regular backup on a portable disk, such as a floppy disk or other portable media. (Most Budgetizer backup files should be small enough to fit on a floppy disk.) You may want to come up with a naming scheme for you backups, which will indicate the date on which the backup was made. However, you are free to name your backups anything you wish.

Restoring from back up is as easy as creating a backup. You can restore from backup by clicking on "File" in the Main Menu, then clicking on "Restore from backup...". You will then be given a file dialog which will allow you to select the backup file to restore from.

NOTE: When you restore from backup, Budgetizer is restored to it's former state. All changes since the backup was made will be lost and cannot be recovered. You cannot "undo" a restore from backup.

WARNING: If you attempt to restore from a file that is not actually a Budgetizer backup, your data will be lost permanently. Be sure that the file you are restoring from is a Budgetizer backup file.
